Several years ago, we discovered El Grill on the frontage road adjacent to the highway going south through San Jose del Cabo about two blocks north of Walmart. Waleed, the owner and chef is from northern Iraq and has cooked in Cyprus, Greece and London. He met the love of his life in London and Blanca is Mexican. So they moved to Los Cabos, which allowed Waleed to achieve his dream of having his own restaurant.
El Grill is an open dining room under a large palapa with a long bar running along the left side of the room. The menu offers a range of appetizers, pastas, Greek specialties and Mediterranean dishes and vegetarian and vegan options. The food is good and the service is always friendly and attentive. We try to experience the restaurant at least once a month. There are often updates on the menu that we try to taste.
On our most recent visit, Waleed had just added a potato salad to the menu. We ordered this as an appetizer. Unlike a traditional potato salad with mustard and mayonnaise, this was a salad with potatoes. The platter was huge, the dressing was delicious and it instantly became a favorite for us. The salad was served with fresh grilled pita bread and tzatziki as a dip. For entrées, Beth ordered the Chicken Souvlaki. a large skewer with chicken and onions served with rice and grilled beans and mushrooms. I selected the penne pasta with mushrooms and fresh parmesan cheese. Both dishes were large and very tasty. I had my glass of chardonnay to accompany the meal and Beth had limonada mineral.
Our dinner was topped off with traditional Baklava for dessert. It was dripping in honey and soooo sweet. El Grill is also our go to place for appetizers when we are having a group over for drinks. The hummus and tapenade with fresh pita are wonderful and Waleed always has it ready for me to pick up for our events.
