El Toro y La Luna in Los Barriles & La Ribera

John Anderson, Editor

Late last year one of our new neighbors in Pueblo Campestre recommended that we visit El Toro y La Luna if we were looking for Mexican furniture, pots or decoration items for our new home. So when we dropped our daughter off to go diving in Cabo Pulmo, we drove to the location in La Ribera. With a large fenced in outdoor space, they had a large selection of pots, vases, fire pits and fountains. There was one whole room of large wood Mexican furniture – tables, dressers, beds – and another small room with just bedroom items. The main area of the store had everything you could think of for your home in terms of accessories from artwork to “Equipal” furniture to pottery and ceramics.

However, we had not visited the main store which is in Los Barriles. When I saw that they were having a Valentine’s Day sale on February 13th and 14th with discounts of 5 to 15%, we decided to drive up from San Jose del Cabo to take a look. While this main location did not have a large outdoor area, the interior of the store was huge with sections featuring different product types. Right inside the front door on what used to be a terrace was a great selection of chairs to the left and chairs, tables and lighting to the left. With wall art on both sides. To the right just inside the main part of the store is a whole section of textile and fabric items with a side room of carpets. Beth immediately headed to the placemats and napkins and selected sets of six of each. The next section had silver frames, large glass candle holders with silver bases and a full selection of Day of the Dead items as well as other small glass and ceramic items. There were a few sections along the right side that featured different kinds of Mexican artisanal furniture. At the back of the store was an amazing tile section with individual tiles or several selections of large murals that could be made with Mexican tile. Up the middle of the store and to the left side were furniture pieces – tables, chairs, sofas, bureaus and more. There is a whole section of candles. Artwork hangs on the walls around the whole store and iron work wall lights and chandeliers hang from the ceiling.

We met Ellen Willis Serrato, the daughter of the owner who was familiar with the story that I had written about the La Ribera location in December. Beth brought a selection of napkins, placemats, a decorative box, a glass candle centerpiece with red candle and a blue donkey to put on our shelves. We also got a gorgeous ceramic donkey with a place for two plants. The discount was based on drawing a small piece of paper out of a basket and unfolding it to find out what deal you had. I was lucky and picked a piece with a 15% discount. The discount was based on paying cash. Ellen helped us out to our car with the purchases.

We promised that we would stop at the La Ribera location on our way back to San Jose del Cabo. Beth was looking for some small iron wall mounted candle holders that we could put beside the windows in the mural in our patio that had been painted by Holly Heiser Hornyan. While we could find them, La Ribera was the expensive stop. We found a metal map of Baja with a compass on the top that could be mounted outside on the red wall upstairs on the second floor of the townhouse and a very large Mexican ceramic pot/vase for the living room. To get our discount we actually had to put down and deposit and go back to San Jose del Cabo to get the cash to come back and pick up these beautiful items.

It was a great day of shopping and a fun trip to Los Barriles and La Ribera. It is worth the trip.
