Getting your Hearing and Sight Checked in Los Cabos – Costco

John Anderson, Editor

Getting older, it has been clear that I have had declines in my eyesight and hearing. I had my eyes checked at a local ophthalmologist and my vision checked at an optometrist. But when the prescription was done, my sight was worse. So when I Costco, I went for an eye test. They did all of the tests for cataracts, glaucoma as well as vision and noted that my eyes were fine and that my eyesight had changed only slightly. Based on this new prescription, I had the lenses changed in two pairs of glasses and had one new set of frames done with transitions lenses. The service was terrific and the cost was dramatically less than my last test and glasses in Colorado.

Two years ago, I went to Costco in Cabo San Lucas to have my hearing checked. The result was the purchase of Rexton hearing aids. About a month ago, the right hearing aid wasn’t working. With purchase at Costco there is free maintenance for two years and insurance for loss or damage for three years. The audiologist cleaned and then tested my hearing aids and we determined that the right one had failed. She said it would take about two weeks to get the replacement.

When it came in, I set up an appointment as we did another complete hearing test, which takes about two hours. I was seated in a chair which place me between two speakers. One speaker was connected to a piece placed around my neck with small pieces placed in my ears. The other was a wall mounted speaker. The test involved a number of steps starting with pressing a button when I heard three beeps. Each ear was done separately and the beeps were both at different decibel levels and different tones. Another part of the test involved repeating the last word in a sentence. Another involved repeating words that were broadcast from the speaker. Again, these words were played at different levels and different tones. The final test involved a sentence that included words in several different languages – English, French, Spanish, German, Arabic, Hebrew. With each stage in the audiologist was refining the profile of my hearing (and hearing loss) in each year on her computer screen.

Once the profile was established, the computer was connected to my hearing aids and downloaded to establish the settings. There had also been several upgrades to the software since my original test and so the audiologist downloaded profiles that removed background noise at parties or in loud places and a special setting for watching television. The profile could be changed simply by pushing the button on the left hearing aid and the volume changed by pushing the button on the right hearing aid. These upgrades have made my hearing in different settings at lot better.

So, if you need your eyesight or hearing checked, consider the units at Costco. The tests are free and the prices of products very reasonable.
