We spend a lot of time looking for the best local places to eat in Los Cabos. Prices have increased everywhere but as a luxury location, many of the restaurants have climbed to the prices of Los Angeles and New York. So, when friends recommend that we check out someplace (thanks Bill Girdwood), I try to do so.

La Cocina de Marcela Mex is a small restaurant on the corner of Paseo de Barlavento and Blvd. Fondadores, the main road north of the highway running through the small villages that are part of San Jose del Cabo. As a point of reference, it is just one block north of the divided road that runs up from Paseo Pescador just a few blocks from CFE in Chamizal. The restaurant is open from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm every day except Monday. There is a breakfast menu, but the lunch menu changes every day and is written on a white board just inside the door.

La Cocina de Marcela Mex is a family business run by Manuel, his wife Marcela, and his son Many. The restaurant has been in business for 21 years. It is clearly popular among the locals and quite a few people came for breakfast and others stopped to get food to take away.

The breakfast menu includes eggs (lots of kinds), omelets, quesadillas, chilaquiles, chorizo, and machaca. The base price including tortillas, beans, cheese, avocado and coffee or flavored water is only $120 pesos (about $7.00 US). Some of the specials were $140 or $160 pesos.

I was there for breakfast and so I ordered the Huevos a la Mexicana. The plate was large, and the taste was great. While I was there, Many started to write the lunch menu on the board. The choices included tortilla soup, tortillas and flavored water and was $220 pesos (about $13.00 US). This price was for dishes with beef, chicken, steak, pozole and more.

After I ate my breakfast, I introduced myself to Manuel to get the history of the restaurant and to ask permission to take pictures of the large industrial kitchen. As the restaurant was going to close for vacation for two weeks, I agreed to post the story after they reopened in the new year.
