Looking for an evening of food, music and entertainment on the beach? Try Mama Mia on a Thursday night. Parking at Coral Baja and walking back to this restaurant on the beach shows you the choice of seating – under cover with a view, in the bar with the big screens playing Thursday night football or right on the beach. In the middle of it all is a place for the band and a dance floor to enjoy the music even more. On Thursdays – BBQ Night – Cuban Spirit, a trio plays great Spanish music (and a few American Hits) and the guests dance the salsa on the dance floor in front of the band.
The menu includes pizza and calzones as well as lots of BBQ favorites, skewers, and extensive choice from the Sea of Cortez – octopus, catch of the day, fish filets and shrimp with a number of different preparations. Most of the entrées come with baked potato and grilled corn and the fish is served with wild rice and vegetables. There are even three different burgers if you want a casual night. There cocktail list is even longer than the food menu.
Both Beth and I chose the chicken skewers. There were two skewers with chicken, onions, and green and red peppers. The baked potatoes were covered with sour cream and the grilled corn was delicious. For dessert, we ordered the apple tart, which was actually a small apple pie with flaky pastry and ice cream.
While we ate, we enjoyed the performance of Cuban Spirit. Yilianny Valdés Tabares provides the vocals and some back up on percussion. Jhovany Rojo is amazing on acoustic guitar and vocals. and their third member provides full percussion on an electronic drum kit. Yilianny and Jhovany’s harmony is perfect. Several people got up to dance during the evening.
During the band’s break, everyone was entertained by two fire dancers. With combinations of fire sticks and ropes on fire – on ore two at a time – the male and female dancers went through an incredible routine that had the diners cheering.
The food was good, the service attentive and the entertainment excellent. But even more, the price for the whole evening was only $37.50 US.
