Recently, I had been seeing daily Facebook posts for a restaurant called Mr. Alexander on the marina in Cabo San Lucas. Because of the frequency and the newness of the Facebook page, I thought it was a new restaurant. So Beth and I decided to make a reservation and go for our 36th Anniversary.
But it turns out that Alex Brulhart, the chef and owner of the restaurant has been in business in Cabo San Lucas for over 10 years. Alex brings Swiss, French and Mexican influences into the foods offered on the menu. Arriving at the marina, you can see that there is a large outdoor dining area, a bar and indoor area up a few stairs and even a private dining room for events. The menu includes a wide range of choices of soups, salads, hot and cold appetizers to start and choices of seafood, steaks, pastas, fondues and even gluten free items as main courses. There is truly something for everyone. Alexander’s also specializes in a number of the items being prepared table side.
While looking through the menu and making our decisions, Beth enjoyed a Pina Colada (a rare occasion limited to Mama’s on Maui or our anniversary) and I had my standard Chardonnay along with the fresh rolls served to us. We decided to take advantage of some of the table side preparations, starting with the traditional Caesar salad to share. The server combined all of the traditional ingredients in a wooden bowl – egg yolk, garlic, lemon, oil, anchovies, Worcestershire sauce – to make the dressing. I had the fresh parmesan added to my salad (Beth did not). I couldn’t wait to try and even forgot to take a picture until I was half through with it.
For entrées, Beth ordered the Garlic Shrimp. Around the restaurant, I could see guests having their steak, lobster and shrimp cooked table side and decided to try the Tequila Shrimp served in garlic, butter, onion and cream with lots of tequila and served with rice and fresh vegetables. Watching it being prepared with huge flames in the pan at the side of the table was great.
We continued having the table side with the Bananas Flambé. Alexander’s version of Bananas Foster. Once again it was a great show watching the dessert be prepared. When they served it, the plates had Happy Anniversary written in raspberry sauce with fireworks on top.
During our meal, we also were able to enjoy not only the view of the marina but the entertainment that passed by and stopped along the way. A great large mariachi band played in the front of the restaurant for a while. Followed by dancers with electric lights attached to their costumes.
Watching the efficiency of the staff throughout the evening was amazing. There is even a big screen television mounted in the bar area that has a live camera on the kitchen. The preparation and plating of foods was done in style.
Alex Brulhart, stopped by the table to ask us how we enjoyed our dinner, which gave us the opportunity to learn more about him, the restaurant and his other projects – including Vibrant, a few doors down and the plan for a restaurant in the new hotel and mall replacing the gray ghost. He also invited me to take a look at the kitchen and meet the great chefs and sous chefs at work there.
This is definitely a place that we will be back to visit in the near future.
