Pescadería Cabo Mar Gourmet at La Posada del Pescador in Cabo San Lucas

John Anderson, Editor

Los Cabos is a place where you would expect to get fresh seafood as it is on both the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean. Visiting La Comer, Chedraui or Fresko, you can find a great selection of fish and shellfish. However, looking at the display cases, some are in vacuum packs, others are frozen the the “fresh” items on are ice.

Recently, we had the opportunity to visit the Fish market at La Posada del Pescador just north of downtown in Cabo San Lucas (Alikan Esq Ocampo, Col. Mariano Matamoros). It has been in business for 26 years and only fish caught the night before are sold at the market (some of the shellfish has been frozen). Juan Bejarano is the owner and a fisherman that is out regularly to fish for their daily catch. This also means that a slightly different selection of fish will be available each day and will change somewhat by the season. You can buy the fish by the kilogram, either as filets or by the whole fish. You can even get shrimp deveined and ready to cook.

During our visit there was a great selection of shellfish, lobsters and a variety of filets. They even have smaller cuts designed specifically for ceviche. The fish market also has all of the sauces to prepare your fish in your favorite style – from Mexico, Italy, France and even England. Lupita, the owner’s wife and partner told us that customers can call in advance to pick up their fresh fish to cook at home or you can choose a fish and it can be prepared in their restaurant – Los Kurricanes at the attached boutique hotel. The restaurant also has many different sides that you could select to take home to prepare a meal for family and guests.

I wanted to get a sense of how the pricing of this very fresh fish compared to going to a store like Chedraui and found that not only was it fresher, but it was also less expensive.

This is truly a hidden gem. For more information on the fish market and restaurant visit their website at http://www.pescaderiacabomar.net/ or visit them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/loskurricanes
