Pietro’s Ristorante Italiano in The Art District

Pietro’s Ristorante Italiano in The Art District. Our friends Jerry and Maura were visiting from Scottsdale and wanted to have an Italian meal – Jerry has an Italian heritage. We decide to go to Pietro’s Ristorante Italiano on Jose Maria Morelos in the Art District of San Jose del Cabo. It is a unique place as you enter from the street through a brick tunnel into the bar and then into the outdoor dining patio at the back of the restaurant. On the right side is a large pizza oven and the pizza chef is always putting on a show as he makes the dough and twirls it in the air.

It was a Thursday Art Walk night and so the restaurant was packed. We received our menus and ordered some wine – white for me and red for Jerry and Maura – while we studied the menu. To start, Jerry ordered the Caprese Salad to start with sliced tomatoes and mozzarella cheese. Then everyone chose a different pasta – Spaghetti Carbonara (Jerry), Spaghetti Pesto (Maura), Gnocchi Sorrentina (Beth) and Gnocchi Bolognese stuffed with pork for me.

Everyone was enjoying their pasta except me. It turned out that the Gnocchi Bolognese had big lumps of pork inside, rather than a minced pork that was hard and chewy. Everyone else loved their pasta. But as they cleared the table, seeing that I had not eaten any of my pasta, no one seem to wonder why. The restaurant was so busy because of Art Walk and clearly a little understaffed so even when we tried to get attention of our server, we had no success.

While we really like the restaurant, we learned an important lesson – don’t go on Thursday nights when it is likely to be packed. As a former owner of two restaurants, I tried to provide some feedback to management. Unfortunately, they also seemed too busy to really care. It’s too bad as we had experienced the complete opposite on two early visits (when it was not so busy).

It is also important to note that Pietro’s in San Jose del Cabo is not associated with Trattoria da Pietro or Steakhouse da Pietro in Plaza Novvo in El Tezal behind Costco.
