Ruba’s Bakery and Bistro

John Anderson, Editor

For years we had walked down Jose Maria Morales Street and past Ruba’s Bakery. Because we had thought it was a coffee shop and bakery, we had not stopped in. Several months ago, we went in for breakfast and were extremely impressed, but we had never been to Ruba’s for dinner. So, we thought that it was time to try it.

Ruba’s has extensive seating outside in the front at the boat-shaped bar and at two garden areas in the back of the restaurant. The old house that houses the bakery also has two inside rooms. As it is hot in San Jose del Cabo this time of year, we decided to sit inside. We were seated given our menus and offered something to drink. We knew that many of the items on the menu draw from the fresh breads and dough made at the restaurant – sandwiches, burgers, pizzas. However, the menu includes a great selection of starters – fondue, ceviche, tartar, charcuterie, and salads. There are also main dishes that feature steak, salmon, short ribs and pasta.

As appetizers, Beth ordered the Burrata Salad and I ordered the salmon stuffed avocado. The presentation on both was great and the flavors even better. The burrata was creamy and served over tomatoes, caramelized pears, and onions. The avocado was huge with lots of salmon pieces in a delicious sauce with crusty bread and salad. For our main course, we shared a Napolitana pizza with sliced tomatoes, black olives and fresh basil. As you would expect from a bakery, the crust was exceptional.

Once again, we were very impressed with Ruba’s and saw much more of the Bistro side at our dinner. We will definitely be back.
