Salvatore G’s in Cabo San Lucas

If you are looking for great Italian food in Cabo San Lucas, Salvatore G’s is one of the best choices in Los Cabos.  Located in the Siesta Suites Hotel on Calle Emiliano Zapata between Guerrero & Hidalgo, one block north of the Tesoro Hotel, Salvatore G’s (G stands for Galluzzo) has been in Cabo San Lucas for 15 years.

I had the opportunity to learn more about the history of the restaurant from Matt Galluzzo, one of Salvatore’s two sons who now own and run the restaurant.  Salvatore had a restaurant in Oregon and after visits to Los Cabos told his family that they had to have a restaurant in Cabo.  Originally, the restaurant surrounded the pool at the Siesta Suites and the staff had to take in their tables and place the chaise lounges around the pool every day.  The restaurant just reopened on October 1st after a summer break and renovations – replacing the pool with a fountain, opening up the front room to the street, and sprucing up the whole space.  The family has also just signed a new 10-year lease for the space.

Salvatore G’s is known for both the quality of the food and the portion sizes.  The servers actually warn you about how much food you are going to get.  It is common to see diners leaving the restaurant with their to-go bags.  Matt said that there are lots of choices for Italian food in Cabo San Lucas but their guests know that they will get a lot of really good food.  People were clearly waiting for the reopening because the restaurant was packed.  Salvatore G’s has seatings at 4:00, 6:00, and 8:00 pm and it was full as we left just before 8:00, there was a large group of people waiting to be seated.

Five of us were at Salvatore G’s for the night they reopened for the season and the photos below will demonstrate the truth of the statement about big portions and great food.  Our server Hugo placed two small loaves of fresh bread on the table as he was taking our orders for drinks.  For appetizers, we had several of the items from the menu – Bruschetta, Italian Torta, Caesar Salad.  The Bruschetta are five pieces of crusty bread piled high with chopped tomatoes, basil, garlic, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar and are delicious.  The Italian Torta is a large platter with salad, layers of cream cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, pesto, and roasted garlic served with meats, antipasti, and crostinis – another winner.  The bowl of Caesar salad is also enough for two.  Some people would end their meals at this point.

However, our table moved on to the main course.  Beth ordered the Chicken Piccata, I ordered the daily special (there is a daily special every day) of the Chicken Gorgonzola, Diane had spaghetti with meatballs, Bill the Baked Rigatoni, and Ivan selected the Lamb Ravioli.  No one was disappointed.  Both Beth and I took more than half of our choices home for dinner the next day.  There were two large chicken breasts in each.  The three meatballs on Diane’s spaghetti were the size of baseballs and would have been a meal for two in and of themselves.  Ivan said that his lamb ravioli was delicious and half of it went with him.  Bill also didn’t finish off his Baked Rigatoni, which included chunks of chicken and Italian sausage.

All of us didn’t finish our main courses, in part because we were saving room for dessert.  With two orders of cannoli, a huge slice of tiramisu, and chocolate moose, we finally finished our dinner, just barely able to get up and leave the restaurant – our to-go bags in hand.

If you like Italian food, Salvatore G’s is a place not to miss during your visit to Los Cabos.  Great food, a very pleasant atmosphere, friendly and attentive service, and enough for your lunch or dinner the next day.
