REPAIRS TO MY 2005 TOYOTA TUNDRA - SHAWN MOORE

John Anderson, Editor

I had noticed that my 4-wheel drive was not working correctly and that my transmission seemed to be slipping. I didn’t know where to go to have the problems diagnosed and fixed. I posted on the Facebook group Cabo: Everything you want and need to know. I had several recommendations. One of which was Shawn Moore. I contacted him and made an appointment for him to look at my truck. Shawn lives need Pedregal and has worked with several different specialist shops in Los Cabos for years. When I arrived for the appointment, Shawn came straight out and hooked his tablet to the computer in the car to see what was behind the “Check Engine” light being on in the dashboard. I knew that the catalytic converter was an issue because Toyota had found it – said that they had trouble getting the parts and the total cost of replacing it with a Toyota product was over $4,000 US.

Shawn found a number of issues beyond the catalytic converter including the air bag in the steering wheel (which turned out just to be because the battery had been disconnected and it was fixed immediately). Shawn listened to my concerns and then we took a test drive through the hills and roads in the Pueblo Bonita property. From that test drive, he identified the potential problems with the transmission, 4-wheel drive, and brakes. He told me that in all probability the fluid in the transmission needed to be changed to allow the fluid to flow more smoothly. He also said that he had a supplier for after-market catalytic converters that we much less expensive that from Toyota. The scan had also shown that there might be an issue with the oxygen sensors. He said that once he had the truck jacked up that he would also check the differentials, rotate the tires and see if there were any other issues that should be addressed.

As we moved along, Shawn provided me with daily updates on what he was finding with photos, the availability and cost of parts, and what work was being done when. When the truck went to have the catalytic converter installed, it was found that the core had been removed. The catalytic converter and oxygen sensors were replaced at a very reasonable cost. Changing the oil in the transmission solved the problem of with both the transmission and the 4-wheel drive. With the raised car, it was clear that the brakes needed to be repaired – new rotors on the front and the rear brakes need the drums bored. Shawn also discovered that the front sway bars needed to be replaced. All the parts were ordered and installed. The brakes are now great and he informed me to use the parking brake as it adjusts the rear brakes as they are seated. The differential oils were changed – one was very clean, the other dark but with no signs of ground metal in the oil. When I went to pick up the truck, it was washed and we took another test drive to show the difference in the performance and for Shawn to suggest some additional things that I should do for maintenance. I was very happy with the communication, the work and the cost of the repairs.
