Terranova is a small, gated community just past La Fortuna on the East Cape of Los Cabos. This community has some incredible new homes and one of them is Casa Cinco Llaves. The house, in a gated compound appears to be set on about a half-acre, has two bedrooms and decks on both the second and third floor. The solar installation in this house is state-of-the-art. Mounted on the roof are 12 485 W SunPower solar panels, capable of producing 5.8 kW of power an hour when the sun is full. The real advantage of Sun Power panels is that they have a copper mesh on the back side of the panel and each individual cell can bend almost in half in high winds. This means that SunPower panels are very unlikely to get any damage during a hurricane.
The system has a new Schneider Electric 6.8 kW 48V Inverter with built in breakers and charge controller. The charge controller is 100 amps.
These components lead to storage in the new Blue Planet Energy H1 battery management cabinet, which holds 16 kW of storage in eight (2 kW Blue Ion lithium ion batteries. From our personal experience, these batteries start to charge as soon as sun hits the panels and can be fully charged by 10:00 or 10:30 am. These batteries even charge with grey skies as long as there is glare. The new H1 system from Blue Planet Energy also has a new remote monitoring system that allows you to look at the current levels and operation of each of the components in the system (see photo). Unlike the other Blue Ion Battery Management Cabinet, this one has a closed front with ventilation and pest control.
While I was at the residence, Innovacion Solar was in the process of installing a new Kohler propane generator that will start automatically in the case of loss of power from the batteries during a long overcast or storm period. It is also designed to help equalize the batteries on a weekly basis.
The system is clearly designed to accommodate significant increases in power usage in the future.
