Solar Sunday - Overcoming Rolling Black Outs in Los Cabos

John Anderson, Editor

Recently, the whole of Los Cabos lost electricity for much of one day and then parts of several days to follow. In our condo in San Jose del Cabo, this created problems not only for just normal living but in getting in and out of the complex as both the walking gate and the parking lot gates are opened by electric motors. Beth was at a hair appointment when the power went out and was told that the power would be out for two to four hours due to a problem in Santiago, about 20 miles north of San Jose del Cabo. While the power came back on, it was on and off and certain things (e.g., traffic lights, streetlights) in some areas continued to be out. These blackouts weren’t due to weather. Power often goes out during and after hurricanes in Los Cabos.

This made us very happy that we were putting solar power into our townhouse in Pueblo Los Cabos and made us long for our off-the-grid house in Zacatitos. With great solar systems, this is not a problem about which we needed to worry.

The next day, Francisco Vargas, the COO of Innovacion Solar posts images of a dozen or more of the homes in the area that have solar, showing that the batteries were discharging and how long they had to go before power would be out. Of course, as long as there is sun or even glare, the Blue Ion Lithium-Ion batteries will continue to charge.
