Tequila Restaurant San Jose de Cabo

John Anderson, Editor

Created by Chef Enrique Silva in 1996, Tequila Restaurant has been a popular destination in downtown San Jose del Cabo on Manuel Doblado, a half block off the plaza on Mijares. Beth and I used to visit Tequila regularly because of the great garden setting. Ezra Katz, the well-known artist in Todos Santos told me that it was his favorite place in San Jose del Cabo. Chef Enrique went on to launch the farm-to-table restaurant, Huerta Los Tamarindos just off the arroyo in San Jose del Cabo, growing its own vegetables and raising some of its poultry. After the pandemic, for a short period Tequila became Los Tamarindos Centro but recently returned to its roots as Tequila.

Entering the restaurant from the street, the host stand is to the right with a private dining room behind it, and a display case of Tequila is on the left. We were led through another seating area to the stairs down to the garden restaurant. The tables surround a 150-year-old tree, giving the restaurant a great atmosphere at any time of the day. A night, the combination of electric candles in key places and the natural shade hanging lights throughout the restaurant make it comfortable and charming.

Our server offered us the menu asked us what we would like to drink. Beth asked for her regular limonada mineral and for me, Chardonnay of course. The Chardonnay from the Valle de Guadalupe in northern Baja was Jardin Romantico (a description of the restaurant) and was very good. Beth decided to start with a Caesar Salad. The romaine lettuce was topped with creamy Caesar dressing and a large crusty crouton. I ordered the Sashimi with the fresh yellow tail tuna, which was placed on a layer of shredded cucumber and topped with onions and avocado slices. It was excellent.

For main courses, Beth selected the Mesquite-grilled Catch of the Day, which was sea bass and was served with grilled zucchini. I chose the Pork Shank, which was topped with pickled onions and served with an Oaxacan green mole. The pork just fell off the bone. Although we were both quite full, I ordered the Colima Key Lime Pie for dessert. I love key lime pie!

The overall experience at Tequila matched our memories of the old days. Our server was excellent. The food and presentation were good and the atmosphere enjoyable. During the meal several wandering guitarists entered the restaurant and played for several of the guests, adding to the ambience.
